Nothing beats a walk in the park… except maybe a bike ride. Or a jog. Or a picnic.
Good thing the Ironton Rail Trail is within walking distance of Haven Ridge!
This former rail corridor spans nine miles of Whitehall Township and Coplay, providing a perfect local recreational opportunity, no matter what type of outdoor activity interest you. Much of the trail is paved for convenient biking or rollerblading, but it is also used regularly for historical events like hikes, trolley tours and a local 10K race.
The Rail Trail celebrated its 18th anniversary this past June. Though it currently boasts gorgeous green scenery and relaxing parks, the corridor was originally home to the Ironton Railroad, an iron transportation vessel established in 1860. Where trains once ran to and from local cement mills, now you will find locals enjoying a leisurely walk on the completely transformed trail.
Offering a six mile loop and a three mile spur, the trail offers historical views of some of the last old cement kilns in the United States. Markers along the trail note the kilns’ roles in American History.
Whether you’re a history buff or and avid runner, the Ironton Rail Trail makes for a great local destination for residents at Haven Ridge.
