It’s not easy to convince the whole family to take part in spring cleaning, especially when your kids have caught spring fever and the weather is perfect for playing outdoors. How to get your kids involved in the clean-up? We’ve got some ideas.
Pre-clean. Before inviting the kids to join you, take a quick inventory of what your children CAN help you clean. You don’t want them interacting with chemicals of any kind, but they can certainly sort through the toys in their room or help dust tabletops. Make a quick list of kid-friendly cleanups and keep it handy. This way you will not need to halt the momentum to come up with another project for your kids to work on once they get moving.
Give some motivation. A chore chart or rewards system can help get your kids motivated to get the tasks done. A tangible way of tracking their accomplishments will help your child feel successful and make a seemingly dull task much more exciting. For a spur of the moment clean up, offer a fun family game or dinner as the end goal once all the day’s work is done.
Make it a game. Cleaning can be… fun? “Fun” might not be a word you or your family usually associate with household chores, but doing them as a group ads lots of potential for memorable family time. Maybe the first person to fill a bag with clothes to donate gets to be king or queen for the day, or the person with the dustiest rag after cleaning their room gets to pick that night’s dinner. Before you know it, the whole family will be actually enjoying themselves!
