Many people enjoy having a stove that features a double glass oven door. However, such appliances must be cleaned properly to keep them in top condition. Follow some of these helpful tips on how to properly clean an oven door.
Disassemble the Door
Your first step is to disassemble the door, but prior to doing so you must make sure you have the appropriate items necessary to complete the job. These are glass or stove top cleaner, nonabrasive cloths and a plain glass cleaner. For certain stove models, it is not recommended that you take the door apart without the assistance of a service technician. Read your warranty to discover if doing so will void the guarantee.
Once the glass has been removed from the door, in most cases by a service technician, you should use the plain glass cleaner to remove as much buildup as you can and the glass stove top cleaner for hard to remove stains. The door can now be reassembled.
Fortunately, you have another option if the appliance is no longer under warranty or the glass cannot be removed for another reason: cleaning between the panes. For this method, you will need the following items:
- Bottle brush or long handled cleaner
- Ruler or yardstick wrapped in cloth
- Dryer vent brush,
- Bent wire hanger, also wrapped in cloth
- Soft cleaning cloth
- Glass cleaner
- Duct tape
Most oven models have small vents located at the top or bottom of the door. By inserting a long handled stick to which a cloth is attached with duct tape, you can clean gently between the panes of glass without taking the door apart.
You have a variety of options when selecting a long-handled cleaning tool so do not be afraid to be creative. Whether you choose a long sock, old towel or standard cleaning cloth, it is important to fasten it securely so it does not separate and become wedged in the door. The soft cloth or sock should be pre-moistoned with the cleaning product of your choice and then inserted through the vents. After this, it is simply a matter of moving the cloth back and forth between the panes until all debris is removed.
Many companies include the dis-assembly of the door in the warranty that comes with the appliance, so check to see if this may be a free service before you begin.
Try cleaning products specifically designed for glass stove tops, as they are often better at removing build-up than regular glass cleaner.
If there are spots that simply cannot be removed from the glass, you can use a decorative dishtowel that remains in place to conceal some of the stains.
Always follow the manufacturer’s directions when using various products to clean your stove. Additionally, refer to the owner’s manual and follow any instructions that apply specifically to your model.
